Peter was an orphan and was treated very poorly when he was young. He escaped poverty and neglect from his brother and was taken under his other brother's wing who was archpriest of Ravenna. His brother sent Peter to very good schools and later became a professor. He vas very faithful to God. He fasted rigorously and spent many hours in prayer. He gave up being a professor to go pray with the
Benedictines of the reform of St. Romuald at Fonte Avellana.
Peter was so eager to pray that he lost sleep and suffered from insomnia. He had to use some prudence in taking care of himself. When he was not praying, he
studied the Bible. When the abbot died, he had Peter take his place as abbot. Later in life, Pope Stephen IX made Peter the Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia. He worked hard to wipe out simony and encouraged his priests to observe celibacy and encouraged many more things. He died on February 22, 1072. In 1828, he was declared a Doctor of the Church. I learned the Peter was very faithful and tried
his best when he was the Cardinal-Bishop.

St. Apollonia
By Rachel K.
St. Apollonia was a deaconess at the time. When she was alive, people were persecuted in Alexandria where she was living. Several people were killed because they didn't change their faith. One day, persecutors seized and started to torture, beat, and knock out all her teeth. The people started a fire and threatened to throw her into the flames. She said to give her a moment. She tricked them and jumped into the fire willingly.
It is said that she jumped into the fames because she was inspired by the Holy Spirit. St. Apollonia is the patron saint of dental diseases and people suffering from toothaches. I learned that it was hard to worship God back then. St. Apollonia was brave enough to jump into the flames for God.

St. Blaise
By Rachel K.

St. Blaise is celebrated on February 3. He was alive in AD 316 and was the bishop of Sebastea, Armenia. It is said in the legendary book, Acts of Saint Blaise, that he was a good bishop, and worked hard to encourage spiritual and physical health of his people. Later when the Roman Empire was 5 years old, the Romans forced St. Blaise to flee to the back country while Armenia was persecuted.
While Armenia was being persecuted, St. Blaise lived as a hermit in a cave. One day, a group of hunters found his cave. What they saw was St. Blaise in prayer and he was surrounded by wolves, lions, and bears. The hunters took him to jail because he was a bishop. While the hunters were taking St. Blaise to jail, as legend has it, a mother with a young son came to them and the son had a fish bone stuck in his throat. At St. Blaise's command, the boy was able to
cough up the bone. While in jail, the governor of Cappadocia, tried to persuade St. Blaise to sacrifice to pagan gods. He was beaten the first time he refused. After many refuses, they beheaded him. He is the patron saint of throat ailments. What I learned about St. Blaise is that he was kind to everybody and was very faithful to God.
